John Muir casts a huge shadow on the environmental movement that he helped to found in his adopted California. The same brooks and meadows and mountains he loved so dearly still exist, largely unchanged, due in part to his tireless efforts to preserve these wild places that were considered inexhaustible, and therefore expendable.
It is impossible to say what Muir would think of the honor of having his likeness depicted on the back of the California state quarter nearly a century after his death. But there is little doubt he would be overjoyed with the National Park system that preserves so much of what he held dear. And he would likely be amazed that there is presently a real and serious effort to tear down the O'Shaughnessy Dam that he battled so strongly against during the last years of his life.
The possibility of restoring Hetch Hetchy Valley to its former natural state, and preserving it without the commercial concerns found in Yosemite Valley, is a tantalizing, unprecedented prospect. This book looks at the poetic side of this extraordinary man, who found so much to honor and praise in his "blessed sun-fed mountains."

  • Bernice Turoff was inspired by a presentation by Garrett Burke, the designer of the California quarter, at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Mr Burke chose to depict Yosemite Valley as representative of the wild and natural places of California, and John Muir for his tireless efforts to preserve our natural heritage. The proceeds from this book will help the campaign to restore Hetch Hetchy, a beautiful valley rivaling Yosemite, that Muir fought long and hard to preserve. His battle continues through our work. David Best has been roaming the wilderness backcountry, Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite Valleys, and the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada for the last twenty years. With his 4.x5 Vista view camera and panoramic Fuji 617, he especially loves the crisp morning light of autumn and early spring for his photographic wanderings. He remembers his great-grandfather's stories about hiking with John Muir in the early days of the Sierra Club's wilderness camping programs.
